Agostinho P. Mendes, 81, passed away on Sunday December 1, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Maria Celeste (Laginhas Sequeira) Mendes. They have been married for over 57 years. Their love story began back when they were growing up in their Portugal hometown with him serenading her, knowing their love would be everlasting.

Born in Vila Ruiva da Serra, Portugal, Agostinho was the son of the late Carlos Augusto Mendes and Maria do Rosario Pereira Fernandes.

He served in the Portuguese military before moving to the United States with his parents. He worked in construction in Mt. Vernon, New York, where he and Maria were married. Their family then moved to Rhode Island, where he was employed for many years by Carol Cable / General Cable in Lincoln.

Agostinho was a religious man and always provided for his family. He was the greatest soccer fan of his team, Sporting Clube de Portugal. He was also a member of the Portuguese Social Club of Pawtucket and a member of Clube Juventude Lusitania of Cumberland.

Besides his loving wife, he is survived by two devoted daughters, Lucia M. Cacchiotti and her husband George, Lisa M. Spinella and her husband Joseph, four beloved grandchildren, Michael, George, Jack and Maya. He is the brother of two siblings, has nieces and nephews, along with two adoring grandpups, Barney and Bentley.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, December 4, 2024 at 12:30pm in the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, 1081 Mineral Spring Ave, North Providence. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Alzheimer's Association https://www.alz.org/ri.
